Vaasthu Sastra - The Main Door

Vaasthu Sastra - The Main Door

The Main Door and the Main Door Frame are considered as places of sanctity where Goddess Mahalakshmi resides. This Door Frameshould be installed with enough of sanctity and devotion and should be maintained with care.

The position of the Main Door in a house occupies predominant importance. As we have elsewhere seen, a house should be in a square or rectangle shape.

The Main Door can be on any of the four walls. A favourable direction as preferred in Astrology need not be looked into, In a house, only one individual is not going to live. There is going to be a family living there consisting a group of family members. Each family member will have different favourable direction as per his or her own horoscope. A direction favourable to one family member may not and can not be favourable to all in the family.

As such, looking into a favourable direction for the Main Door will not work out in its right perspective. Hence it is better to forget the favourable direction as per the horoscope.

Instead, installing the Main Door Frame and the Main Door facing any direction, should be favourable to all in the family.

Here, Vaasthu prescribes certain norms as to where the Main Door Frame should be installed on a wall, in whichever direction it is.

If the Main Door has to face the East or West direction, then the Main Door Frame should be installed somewhere on the Northern half of the wall.

If the Main Door has to face the North or South direction, then the Main Door Frame should be installed somewhere on the Eastern half of the Wall.

Installing the Main Door Frame on the exact centre of the wall is also alright, provided the North East Corner (called Easanya Moolai) or the South West Corner (called Nyruthi Moolai or Kanni Moolai or Kubera Moolai) are not disturbed.

(In any case, enough care should be taken that the North East or South West Corners are not affected or disturbed.)

I have mentioned that Goddess Mahalakshmi resides in the Main Door.

In order to honour Goddess Mahalakshmi, we should enrich the thresh hold and the Main Door Frame.

Genuine Precious Metals, Genuine Precious Stones and Coins should be spread on the thresh hold where the Main Door Frame is being installed.

In addition to the above, a small dollar carrying the image of Lord Maha Ganapathi and another small dollar carrying the image of Goddess Mahalakshmi should be fixed on either side of the thresh hold.

The procedure to be followed includes the above in installing the Main Door Frame, which should be performed on the most auspicious time called "Vaasthu Time", which occurs hardly for half an hour in a month and that too not in all the months

Vaasthu Sastra - Lofts & Cupboards

Vaasthu Sastra - Lofts & Cupboards

The Lofts and Cupboards provided within the house may be concrete made or wooden. Bur they carry mass and weight.

Provision of Lofts & Cupboards as such should be west dependent or south dependent.

A loft of cupboard provided on the East or North side adds weight to that side and makes the work inconsistent with Vaasthu parameters.

When a loft and/or cupboard is provided in a room, they should be mounted or constructed on the West or South sides
For the sake of ease of construction work, it is customery that a Loft is constructed on both sides of the wall.

If the loft is constructed in such a manner that it extends on both sides of the wall, on one side it will be on the West or South side and the corresponding other side will happen to be the East or North.

It needs some extra effort, extra labour and extra money to construct every loft or cupboard separately in order to see that the construction of the loft is on the West or South sides of the room.

When it comes to more than one room, the expenses will rather be high. But we mind the expenses, we will be ignoring the Vaasthu parameters and will be loosing long term benefits.

As such, do not mind about some extra expenditure and have the lofts and/or cupboards either on the West side or on the South side or both of the room or hall.

This will add to the elements of prosperity in the house

Vaasthu Sastra - Kitchen

Vaasthu Sastra - Kitchen

Kitchen is the source of energy to the whole family and as well to the whole of the house.

The Kitchen may be located in the house except the Easanya Moolai and Nyruthi Moolai (North East and South West Corners).

But the most preferred place is the Aagneya Moolai - also called the Agni Moolai, which is the South East Corner.

If the South East Corner is not technically feasible, then the Kitchen may be provided in the North West Corner called Vaayaviya or Vaayu Moolai.

The standing posture of the cooking person in the Kitchen should be facing either the East or the North Direction.

The cooking table or cooking slab, normally accommodates a cooking stove or ovan and a water sink for hand and vessel washing.

If the cooking slab runs in the North to South Direction, the Water Sink should be on the north end of the cooking slab and the stove or ovan should be on the middle or south end of the cooking slab.

In this case the standing posture of the cooking person will be towards the East direction.

If the cooking slab runs in the East to West Direction, the Water Sink should be on the East end of the slab and the stove or ovan should be in the middle or the west end of the slab.

In this case the standing posture of the cooking person will be towards the North direction.

If a shelf is provided to keep utensils, it should be provided in the south or west ends of the cooking slab.

If a shelf is provided to keep cookware, groceries etc, it should be on the back side of the cooking person. In other words, the shelf should be on the South Side or West Side Wall of the Kitchen.

If the Kitchen is enough wide and if a Pooja Shelf is separately provided, it should also be provided alongside the kitchen shelf.

Where the available space is limited and a Pooja place is provided within the Shelf, the slab in the shelf or cupboard above chest or atleast hip level may be used for the purpose.

If there is enough space in the Kitchen and if an L shaped cooking slab is provided, additional load like shelf for utensils can be provided on the south side or west side extension of the cooking slab

Vaasthu Sastra - Master Bed Room

Vaasthu Sastra - Master Bed Room
The Master Bed Room is the room which accommodates the head of the family who shoulders the responsibilities of the family.

This Bed Room is formed in the South West Corner of the house. South West Corner is called Nyruthi Moolai or Kanni Moolai in Tamil Vaasthu terminologies. This is also called Gubera Moolai.

This is the room, where heavy material, heavy furniture and valuables should be kept.

It is preferable that the ground level of this room is constructed slightly higher than the other parts of the house.

There should not be a door or outlet in this room except the main entrance to the room.

Ventilation to this room like windows and ventilators should also be to the minimum required extent.

It is advisable that the South West Corner of this room is in a closed state without any window or ventilator.

The Bath Room and Toilet if attached to this room should not be in the South West Corner.

Heavy material like Bureau or Almirah should be placed in the South West Corner.

The Cot provided for bedding should preferably be close to the South West Corner of the room, if the Master Bed Room is enough wide.

Chairs, Study/Computer Table etc if accommodated in the room should be close to the North or East Side wall of the room - but not touching the wall

Vaasthu Sastra - Pooja Room

Vaasthu Sastra - Pooja Room
The Pooja Room may be an independent room. Or it can be a shelf or even a part of a shelf where the images of Gods are kept and worshipped.

A Pooja Room can be anywhere in a house. Some people are of the illusion that the Pooja Room should be in the centre of the house. Some others believe that it should be in the North-East Corner which is called Easanya Moolai. In fact both perceptions are wrong. Even we can say that keeping the Pooja Room either in the centre of the house or in the North East Corner is not so auspicious as compared to other places in the house.

The Centre of the House is called Brahmma Sthanam, which should normally be kept vacnt so as to allow the universal positive energies will circulate around. The North East Corner should also be, as far as possible, vacant without much of load bearing. Also, in a Pooja Room, our custom is to light up a lamp before the images of God. A lighted lamp consists of fire. But this corner is supposed to be cool and water bearing.

As such keeping the Pooja Room in either of these two places is not as auspicious as in other places in a house.

Also, a Pooja Room is a place of sanctity and should be clean and tidy both by its physical and environmental architecture.

As such, it is also not advisable to keep the Pooja Room in the Bed Rooms, where family activities take place.

Also, the Pooja Room should not be in a place hear a place where the footwear or the broomstkicks and the like are kept, since they damage the sanctity of the Pooja Room.

The Pooja Room can either be an independant room, or an independant shelf or even part of a shelf.

Whatever is the Pooja Room, it should be in a clean environment and should be cleanly maintained.

The most appropriate place for a Pooja Room is either close to the Kitchen of the House or can even be within the Kitchen.

It is advisable, where non-vegetarian food are cooked in the kitchen, not to keep the Pooja Room within the Kitchen - but in a place close to the Kitchen.

Places like the hall or the dining room are also appropriate to keep the Pooja Room - of course, subject to the above conditions.

It is preferable that the Pooja Room or Pooja Shelf faces the East or North Directions. If both these directions are not feasible, the Pooja Room can face the West Direction.

Whichever the direction the Pooja Room and the Gods' Images face, it is desirable that it is not in the centre part of the house, which is called Brahmma Sthanam

Vaasthu Sastra - Brahmma Sthanam

Vaasthu Sastra - Brahmma Sthanam
The center part of the house is called Brahmma Sthanam. In villages and in old houses, we can see an open space - enough large as possible - is left open to sky.

This area is called "Muttram" in Tamil teminologies. This is Brahmma Sthanam. The center part of the house is left vacant and open to sky.

In modern constructions, it is difficult and rather impossible to leave the central place open to sky. This may also be a security hazard.

But, we can keep this place vacant or free from regular use - without much load put into it.

In the modern construction methods this is possible. Somehow we can spare a small pace in the centre of the house and allow it to be used as a passage.

Normally there is a belief that a Pooja Room is an appropriate application in the Brahmma Sthanam. This concept is wrong. A Pooja Room in the center of the house is not hamful - but keeping the center place vacant is more appropriate than keeping a Pooja Raaom in that place.

A Pooja Room can be kept in part of the house. There can be no restriction as to where God should be worshipped in a house. It can be anywhere in the house.

Some even conceive that the Pooja Room should be kept in the North East Corner, which is called Easanya Moolai.

This Corner (Easanya Moolai) is also a place which should normally be kept vacant without much of load on it.

As such, it is appropriate to keep the Pooja Room in some part of the house other than the Brahmma Sthanam and Easanya Moolai.

These two points should be kept vacant as far as possible. These two points can even be used as a passage.

The Brahmma Sthanam means the center part of the house or the madya pradesam of the house. For the reason that the name suggests Brahmmam, a Pooja Room is not a must in this place.

Every house construction is unique, which has to be decided taking into account the various aspects influencing the place, conveniences and construction feasibilities.

But Brahmma Sthanam and Easanya Moolai need not necessarily be the place for a Pooja Room for the reason that the name of the places suggest it.

The names of the places or corners need not necessarily be attached importance in recognising the importance of its applications. It is the character of the place or corner which have to be considered in their utility.

Hence, if you are of the idea that the Brahmma Sthanam (center of the house) is the appropriate place to keep the Pooja Room, shred out the very thinking. It is not the case

Vaasthu Sastra - North East Corner

Vaasthu Sastra - North East Corner
North East Corner can be a source of water. Water can be allowed to flow into the house through this corner. Equally, drainage water can be allowed pass out of the house through this corner.

For instance, a bore-well or deep-well can be there in the North East Corner area. And also, the public (Corporation/Municipal Water Supply line can be taken into the house through this corner. Similarly, the drainage pipes draining used water may be taken out through this Corner.

For the reason that this corner can be the source of water, no overhead water tank should be installed in the top of the house in this corner. This will defeat the basic concept that Easanya Moola (North East Corner), should be light in weight or in weight bearing.

There should be adequate opening in this Corner. The natural universal energy should be allowed to pass into the house through this Corner.

With the above objective in mind, adequate openings like Door and Windows should be provided in this corner.

It should be ensured that there is no nearby construction to this corner, which will obstruct or block the flow of natural universal energy into the house.

Even if one side of the North East Corner (Easanya Moolai) is blocked, atleast the other one side should be open to the air

Vaasthu Sastra - Basics

Vaasthu Sastra
Indian Vaasthu Sastra is universal

It applies to whole of the Earth and not limited to Indian territory.

Vaasthu applies to the Landscapes, Temples, Mutts, Housing Plots, Houses, Flats, portions of the house, Shops, Business Houses, Offices and all premises used for residential or commercial purposes.

It can not be said that Vaasthu addresses all the problems of life. But, it is evident that Vaasthu addresses several problems in life - even such problems which are not so obvious or evident in an astrological study.

The scope of Pariharas in Astrological study is of course limited. But, beyond doubt, Vaasthu provides a solution to a majority of problems in life. This has been and is experienced by several persons.

Vaasthu is independant by itself. It does not depend on the person or persons who own or occupies a house or a place. The house or the place should be prosperous by itself. It should be capable of attracting the positive energies of the universe, so that, the house or place is prosperous by itself whoever owns or occupies the premises.

Vaasthu takes into account the four main directions and the four cardinal corners falling between the main directions.

Now let us see what Vaasthu has to say about a common man's house, flat or portion of a house.

The guidelines given in this section primarily address the needs of a house, flat or a portion of a house, bearing in mind the requirements of a common man.

This section also provides a solution to defective Vaasthu formations which can not be physically corrected for various reasons. For instance, if a particular Flat in an Apartment House is Vaasthu defective, in most cases it can not be physically corrected since it involves the concurrance of all the Flats in that Apartment House, which is rather impractical.

Such places need some kind of an alternate solution which will offset the ill-effects or reduce the intensity of the ill-effects caused by the Vaasthu mal-formation.

The Remedies that can be applied in such cases are also discussed in the chapters of this section.

Vaasthu Sastra considers the four cardinal corners, the four main directions, the position of various accommodations provided in the house including the Brahmma Sthanam in arriving at its conclusions.

It is difficult that all Vaasthu Parameters are applied in a house. But, the must are the must in Vaasthu Sastra in some parameters and some parameters can be compromised with our practical conveniences.
